 October through May Lesson Information

Thanks to working in collaboration with our area schools the Itasca Orchestra’s Strings Programs offers lessons in violin, viola, cello and bass in area schools during the school day. Our instructors will travel to your student's school for the lessons. Lessons are available for students of all ages. Lessons may also be scheduled after school, or after work for our adult learners. Students take twenty-seven ½ hour lessons during the school year and are placed in one of four student orchestras according to ability. The orchestras practice after school at the Robert J. Elkington Middle School Band Room on the following days:

Prelude (Beginners) Tuesdays 3:30-4:30
Overture (2nd and 3rd year students)  Wednesdays 2:45-3:45
Intermezzo (3rd and 4th year students) Thursdays 3:30-4:30
Chamber Orchestra (advanced) Mondays 3:30-4:30

Grand Rapids students in the orchestra program may take buses from their elementary schools to the middle school. Lesson fees are $545 for the year in eight payments of $70 for the first student in a household and $464 in eight payments of $62 for other students in the household.

Our Partnership with MacPhail Center for Music

The Itasca Orchestra and Strings Program and the Itasca Area Schools Collaborative were the recipients of a Light Speed Grant from the Blandin Foundation. Since 2007, the Light Speed Grant Program has provided matching funds to rural Minnesota communities to support project implementation of new broadband applications. MacPhail Center for Music has been a pioneer in long distance learning through the use of Skype and TelePresence. The grant will allow access to MacPhail instructors online. Thanks to the Blandin Foundation for matching us up with this prestigious institution.

Students in Bigfork, Deer River or Coleraine are not expected to attend rehearsals in Grand Rapids. Instructors in Bigfork will form ensembles when students are ready.

Lesson fees qualify for a tax credit with the State of Minnesota. Households that qualify may receive tax credit loans from the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation. The scholarship application is a part of the online registration process available through getlearning.org.
